The discussion over the Sunehri Bagh Mosque near Parliament has intensified after the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) sought public opinion on the proposed demolition of the mosque. As per a 2009 notification of the Delhi government, the mosque has been designated as a Grade-III heritage structure.

The NDMC on Sunday issued a notice inviting objections and suggestions from citizens in the matter till January 1. Indian Express The report said that so far more than 300 suggestions have been received through mail, most of which have opposed the demolition.

Delhi Waqf Board claims that they own the land on which the mosque is situated, but NDMC claims that the government owns the land.

Officials had said that the mosque was causing traffic jams in the area. However, Imam Abdul Aziz of Sunehri Bagh Mosque contested the claims of traffic congestion in the area and termed the notification as “illegal and arbitrary”. Indian Express Report.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Kishanganj MP Dr Mohammad Javed expressed strong objection to the NDMC notification. “I strongly object to the proposed demolition of Sunehri Masjid and urge @tweetndmc to prepare an alternative plan to save this site of immense cultural importance and heritage!”

Indian historian Rana Safvi states that Sunehri Bagh Masjid is a mosque in which Maulana Hasrat Mohani stayed while attending Parliament sessions, and that he refused government accommodation and the salaries and allowances given to MPs.

“Maulana Hasrat Mohani used to commute to Parliament by bicycle or shared tonga to attend the Parliament session. He was the first person to move a resolution for complete independence in the 1931 Congress session. It was he who gave the slogan of Inquilab Zindabad. All this history will go away with the mosque. Quoted by author Sohail Hashmi Indian Express, Said mosque housed freedom fighters like Syed Fazal-ul-Hassan, better known by his alias Hasrat Mohani.

“Mohanani had proposed the proposal for complete independence from British rule which was accepted by the Indian National Congress in 1921 and he coined the famous slogan ‘Inquilab Zindabad’. “Demolition of the mosque will destroy the heritage and history of a nationalist,” the author said.
