Eddie Hearn has hinted that Wayne Rooney could swap football for boxing.

The England football icon has returned to these shores after leaving D.C. United to become manager of Birmingham City.

Rooney has been tasked with guiding the Blues into the Premier League, with Birmingham currently sitting sixth in the Championship table.

He is keen to move to St Andrews and wants to silence his critics, with some believing he is the wrong choice for the post.

However, Hearn has now teased that Rooney could pursue a career in boxing – insisting it is something the footballer is ready for.

“He wouldn’t mind if I told him, but after every big fight, especially with YouTubers, sometimes Rooney sends me a message,” he told Sky Sports.

Gary Neville then shouted: “Didn’t you see him against Phil Bardsley?”

Neville was referring to the incident when Bardsley pinned Rooney to his kitchen floor in 2015.

Hearn joked about the incident, saying: “He had about eight bottles of red in the living room.”

And then a boxing promoter suggested Rooney could fight Jake Paul at Old Trafford.

He said, “Wayne Rooney had very limited amateur pedigree but he could still fight.”

“Wayne Rooney was training, and I said to him, ‘Imagine what shape you could get into too. You’ll get back into shape.’

“(Rooney) against Jake Paul at Old Trafford.”

Paul has been involved in boxing for the last three years and has won seven out of eight bouts so far.

His only loss came against Tommy Fury earlier this year, although he responded shortly thereafter by defeating former UFC star Nate Diaz.

Paul is preparing for the fight on December 15th.

And although his opponent has not been confirmed yet, many are expecting him to fight a professional boxer rather than a YouTuber or former UFC star.

Meanwhile, former Liverpool boss Graeme Souness recently claimed that Rooney was already in a ‘last chance salon’ when it comes to football management.

The former striker has yet to set the world on fire during his spells at Derby and DC United.

And Souness recently wrote: “Wayne Rooney has not been awarded the Birmingham job on the basis of what he has achieved so far in his coaching career.

“He was a really great player and he still has time to become a great manager.

“But he is now in charge of St Andrews because he has 63 million followers across all social media platforms.

“This is the world of football we are in with the power of social media.

“That’s what appealed to Birmingham’s new American owners, who have made a business decision rather than a football one – when the club wanted to work together for the first time in years. Wayne’s predecessor John Eustace had paid the price for running the football club. New Way.

“Wayne would have been aware of the risks associated with this job.

“I see this as his last chance in management, given that he has a win rate of 27.5 per cent during his tenure at Derby County and DC United.”
