NSW to light up Opera House in Israeli colors after Hamas attack

The Sydney Opera House will be illuminated in the colors of the Israeli flag on Monday “in a show of solidarity” with the Jewish community.

NSW Premier Chris Minns has confirmed the Sydney Opera House will be lit in blue and white at 7:30pm on Monday night “in a show of solidarity”.

“On Monday, the Sydney Opera House will show solidarity with the Jewish communities of New South Wales and those whose families are currently in Israel,” he said.

“We are deeply concerned about the terrible attack by Hamas on Israel and the people who have been abducted.

“We will continue to work to ensure we provide every possible support to those affected across our state and are closely monitoring the situation to see if any New South Wales citizens who are currently in the Middle East “Staying on holidays or pilgrimage in, is affected.”

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the “despicable attack on Israel” on Sunday morning, but said Israel had “the right to defend itself”.

“This is a terrible situation that people didn’t see coming,” he told ABC’s Insiders.

“We are certainly concerned about escalating tensions.

“There is no precedent for what is happening here.”

The Executive Council of Australian Jewry said that acts targeting civilians are a “serious war crime” and “an armed attack against a sovereign State”.

Chief Executive Alex Rivchin said, “We expect the State of Israel to take all necessary measures to defend itself and to defeat the terrorist forces of Hamas and restore peace for the citizens of Israel.”

“We call on the Australian Government to condemn these serious crimes without reservation. Any call for de-escalation by “both sides” or attempt to draw parallels between the crimes of a terrorist organization and the defensive measures of a sovereign and democratic state is wrong and only plays into the hands of terrorists.
