England star Kelvin Phillips has admitted he has to ‘scratch his head’ after Jude Bellingham’s excellent performance against Italy on Tuesday night.

The 20-year-old provided an assist for Marcus Rashford as the Three Lions beat their rivals 3-1 at Wembley.

Bellingham has been unstoppable since leaving Borussia Dortmund for Real Madrid in the summer, scoring 10 goals in as many matches for the La Liga giants.

He has also assisted three times in all competitions and is fast establishing himself as one of the best players in world football.

Phillips has now praised Bellingham, speaking to Channel 4 after the competition.

And he has been stunned by the remarkable progress his teammates have made in recent days.

“We knew it was a big game. I think the result is a symbol of what we’ve been doing,” he said.

“With this England team we will always start well because we have such good players on the field but when we have a setback we have Jude as our driving force.” [Bellingham] and harry [Maguire] and marcus’s cunningness [Rashford] To come into favor.

“I scratch my head sometimes and think about how Jude keeps getting better and better.

“He’s very polite and very laid-back. Marcus is the same way.”

Phillips made his England debut despite struggling for game time at Manchester City after transferring from Leeds last year.

And although Gareth Southgate was criticized for that decision, the 27-year-old made no mistake as England secured all three points.

Discussing his own performances, Phillips admitted his struggles at the Etihad Stadium.

And he blamed the yellow card he received for his failure to win against Guardiola and become a regular with the treble winners.

“I kicked myself when I made the challenge, I knew it was going to be a yellow card,” the England star said.

“It’s probably the lack of minutes at club level. I was probably lucky I wasn’t sent off.

“As a footballer you always want to play. I want to play as much as possible but I haven’t done that for the last year and a half.”

“I always try and make sure I’m ready for whatever comes.

“I want minutes, I want to go to the Euros. We’ll see what happens.”

As for Bellingham himself, meanwhile, the England star also opened up after the win over Italy.

And he seems to be getting better and better with each passing match, reaching new heights since leaving Borussia Dortmund for Real Madrid in the summer.

“I’m getting a little better every time I play,” he said.

“A really good night for us, we all remember what happened a few years ago when they played us here.

“You always aim for progress. We are going in the right direction and this is a very important victory for us.”

“I’m loving football at the moment. My management at club and country are giving me the freedom to play it how I see it.

“For the last few months I’ve been really working on my timing of going to the box and as I’ve been coming in I’ve been coming in with a bigger appetite.

“The fact with big transfers is that I have to perform, whether it’s a goal or an assist or a match-winning performance.

“This is the club I want to stay at for the next 10-15 years of my life. I love being there.”

“Carlo [Ancelotti] Basically said this situation is where he sees me.”
