The Gaza Strip, which faced power cuts due to the closure of its only power plant, is now facing a worse problem as the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has warned that Gaza has run out of water. .

In a tweet shared by UNRWA, the UN agency said the situation in Gaza is one of ‘life and death’, even as Palestinians in the densely populated Gaza Strip are struggling for survival.

“It has become a matter of life and death. This is very important; Fuel now needs to be delivered to Gaza to provide water for 2 million people,” said UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini.

People are now being forced to use dirty well water, increasing the risk of water-borne diseases in war-torn Gaza, the UN agency said on microblogging site ‘X’.

“🆘#GazaStrip is running out of clean water after water plants and public water networks stopped working

🆘People are now forced to drink dirty water from wells, due to which the risk of water-borne diseases has increased.

🆘 “Electricity has been shut down in #Gaza since 11 October, affecting water supplies,” UNRWA wrote.

The urgent appeal comes after the Israeli government cut off water, food and fuel from the besieged area. There has been a power outage in Gaza since Wednesday, due to which the water supply is being affected.

“We now need to get fuel by truck into Gaza. The only way for people to get safe drinking water is through fuel. If not, people will start dying from severe dehydration, including small children, the elderly and women. Water is now the last remaining lifeline. I appeal that the siege on humanitarian aid be lifted now,” Lazzarini said.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced in the last 12 hours alone. The exodus continues as people move to the southern parts of the Gaza Strip. The United Nations agency reported that nearly 1 million people were displaced in one week alone.

Additionally, Gaza’s hospitals are also running out of medical supplies and fuel. Media reports confirm that no aid has yet reached Gaza’s 2.3 million residents, as medical supplies and fuel to power hospitals are running out.
