Xabi Alonso claims he is happy at Bayer Leverkusen and doesn’t ‘care’ what his next step in management will be.

The Spaniard is favorite to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool after it was announced on Friday that he would leave at the end of the season.

Alonso is widely regarded as a Liverpool legend after being part of the team that won the Champions League in 2005.

He spent five years as a player on Merseyside, making over 200 first-team appearances and also winning the FA Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

Alonso retired from playing in 2017 and has already shown signs of becoming a top manager at Bayer Leverkusen.

Leverkusen currently top the German Bundesliga, four points ahead of second-placed Bayern Munich, as they seek their first top-flight title in 13 years.

Following the news of Klopp’s departure, Alonso was immediately installed as the favorite to replace him.

The 42-year-old paid tribute to the work Klopp has done since replacing Brendan Rodgers in October 2015.

However, Alonso insisted he is happy at Leverkusen and is determined to focus his full attention on achieving success with them.

He said: “At first it was a surprise. I have a lot of respect for Jurgen, a lot of admiration, before he came to Liverpool and during his years there it has become even bigger and it has increased, what he Have achieved and the way they have achieved it.

“At the moment, I’m really happy here, I’m enjoying my work here. I’m feeling like every day is a challenge, every game is a challenge. And we’re on an intense but beautiful journey here at Leverkusen.

“I’m trying to give my best to help my players get ready for the next thing and that’s my goal. [in the future]I don’t know.”

Leverkusen is Alonso’s first senior job after three years in charge of Real Sociedad B.

Despite the potential temptation of an emotional return to Anfield, he is not thinking about his next move.

Alonso said: “Honestly, I’m not in that moment to think about the next thing. I’m thinking about where I am right now.”

“And I think I’m in a great place and I’m enjoying it. And I think it’s the right place. That’s all I can say.”

“I don’t know what my speed is [of my career] Is. Honestly, my speed will be the team’s speed on Saturday, because that’s what really matters.

“What’s going to happen in the future, I don’t know, and I don’t care right now.”

Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi and ex-Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane have also been linked with the Liverpool job.

Klopp insisted he would play no role in deciding who is the next manager, saying: “No, why should I?

“It feels like I do all the work; I don’t, I can’t and I don’t. It means that behind the scenes of what we’ve built over the last eight and a half years, there’s an incredibly strong Has structure.

“So everything is going in the right direction, so that’s good news. That’s the only reason I can leave it, because my responsibility is huge, my idea is always to keep everything in the right place and help in everything.” “So that this club becomes stronger.” And stronger and stronger.

“We did it. With perfection? No. But as best we could. That means so many people working here, and with only one idea: to find the right solution for Liverpool FC. I’m absolutely sure That it will happen.”

“And the last thing they need is old man advice going out, telling them ‘By the way, make sure you bring him in’. I definitely wouldn’t do that.”
