The United Nations General Assembly has designated 29 November as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. In 1977, the General Assembly called for 29 November to be observed annually as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.

On that day, in 1947, the Assembly adopted a resolution on the partition of Palestine. “The resolution to celebrate the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People encourages Member States to continue broad support and promotion of the celebration of the Day of Solidarity,” the official UN statement said.

UNGA has organized an exhibition commemorating the Palestinian Nakba (the Holocaust), a deeply traumatic event that occurred during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.

During this period, more than half of the Palestinians were either driven from their homes or fled and became refugees.

Nakba, which means “catastrophe” in Arabic, refers to the mass displacement and eviction of Palestinians during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. Before the Nakba, Palestine was a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural society.

However, conflict between Arabs and Jews intensified in the 1930s with increased Jewish immigration due to persecution in Europe and the Zionist movement with the goal of establishing a Jewish state in Palestine.

In early December 1948, the United Nations General Assembly called for refugee return, restitution of property, and compensation. However, 75 years later, despite countless UN resolutions, Palestinians continue to be denied their rights.

The United Nations has said the Nakba serves as a reminder that approximately 6 million Palestinians remain refugees today, scattered across the region.

Thousands of these refugees faced additional forced displacement, while thousands died, during the 2023 Gaza War, amid a situation described by the UN Secretary-General as a “humanitarian disaster”.

A similar situation has now arisen in 2023 when Israel is continuously bombing Palestine’s Gaza with the aim of ‘eliminating’ Hamas. Israel declared war on Hamas after it attacked Israel on October 7 and killed about 1,200 people.

In retaliation, Israel has killed at least 20,000 Palestinians in Gaza.

The League of Arab States observed the ‘International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People’ at the Palestinian Embassy in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, 3 young Palestinian men were shot in Vermont, US. US police had said Hisham Awatani, Kinnan Abdelhamid and Tahsin Ali Ahmed, all 20, were out for a walk to meet one of the victims’ relatives when a white man opened fire on them.
