Labor leader Sir Keir Starmer has promised football fans he will “make sure there is no European Super League” if he becomes Prime Minister after the next general election.
The European Court of Justice ruled yesterday that FIFA and UEFA had acted “unlawfully” by threatening sanctions against clubs that signed up for the controversial Super League.
The original plans led to widespread protests across Europe, and the royal family and then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson also spoke out against ESL.
But the possibility of a Super League relaunching has been revived following the European Court of Justice ruling as new plans were unveiled just minutes after the decision.

A22, the management organization brought in to sponsor the Super League, announced a revised proposal with a number of new promises.
Real Madrid and Barcelona are the only two clubs to have expressed interest in joining the Super League, with former president Florentino Pérez being a big supporter of a separate competition.
All English clubs, who were originally signed up to the project in 2021, have distanced themselves from the revised version, committing themselves to UEFA.
And Sir Starmer has now insisted on social media that he would not allow the formation of a Super League if he is voted in as the country’s next Prime Minister.
“Football fans have been treated like an afterthought for too long,” Starmer wrote on X.
“If I am Prime Minister, I will ensure that the European Super League does not happen.
“It’s time to start involving the fans first.”
His comments come a day after Rishi Sunak’s government confirmed that all English clubs will be banned from joining any European Super League under new legislation to be brought in for 2024.

The UK Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport issued a statement which read: “We took decisive action at the time by launching a fan-led review of football governance, which calls for the creation of a new independent regulator for English football Did.

“We will soon be introducing legislation that will make this a reality, and prevent clubs from entering any similar separate competitions in the future.”
Johnson condemned the original European Super League proposals during his time as Prime Minister, threatening to throw a “legislative bomb”.
He said: “We must drop a legislative bomb to stop this – and we must do it now.”
