Objective (formerly named Kailua Labs), a multimodal search platform built by machine learning experts from Apple, Google, Meta, Amazon, and Twilio, emerged from stealth today with $13 million in venture funding.

Objective is a low-code platform that allows developers to build multi-search apps that handle input and output in multiple formats—text, images, video, and audio. Unlike traditional keyword-based search algorithms, Objective’s in-house technology generates contextually relevant results, using natural language or even combinations of data such as entering image and text queries. Multimodal search has been a topic of conversation among technology companies for years. In the same way that OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4 has brought generative AI into the mainstream, tech giants Google and Microsoft are influencing more and more companies to invest in multimodal large language models to improve the search and discovery experience .

Objective aims to become an affordable solution for all developers to add multimodal search to their toolkit.

“The way the system is built is extremely difficult,” co-founder and CEO Pablo Mendes said during our interview. “Every top 1% most sophisticated company is working on it. Our vision is that the majority of companies in the world would prefer to purchase a solution rather than trying to build a team in-house… We’re building a platform to make this easy and level the playing field.

Objective was co-founded by three ex-Apple employees – Mendes, Joachim Deuber and Lance Hasen – who worked in the AI ​​machine learning division and were responsible for trivia questions for Siri.

“We saw this big movement happening around machine learning,” Mendes said. “We knew this was going to change the way everyone approaches discovery.”

Objective has raised $13 million in multiple funding rounds. It is backed by Matrix Partners, Two Sigma Ventures and angel investors like Topsy co-founder Vipul Ved Prakash, Lattice co-founder Mike Cafarella and former Airbnb director George Bowser.

“Here’s a team that built search for iOS, YouTube – some of the most beloved products in history – and every developer in the world can leverage their experience with a few lines of code,” said Patrick Malatac, partner at Matrix. in a statement.

Nearly a dozen launch partners are using Objective Search, including food delivery company Pod Foods, digital designer’s platform Dribbble, and major news publication The Information.

“There’s only so much you can do with manual tagging and scrubbing of results,” said Zack Onisko, CEO of Dribbble. “Implementing semantic search in-house was taking too long. We watched the Objective Search demo and it was night and day! This partnership will significantly accelerate our data science roadmap.”
