Rajya Sabha MP and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi on Saturday hit out at Union Minister Smriti Irani and said, “It is shameful that we have a minister who does not get the scope of LGBTQIA+ – a commonly used term which also includes transgenders.” Are included.” Many of whom menstruate.” He added that Irani’s “arrogance towards an issue that is a lived experience for many is shocking and insensitive.”

Apart from Priyanka Chaturvedi, Congress leader Supriya Shrinet said in a post on X, “LGBTQIA+ is not gay men alone, the community includes men and many menstruating women.”

Shrinate tweeted, “Minister Smriti Irani your apathy, arrogance and ignorance is appalling…instead of expressing manufactured outrage spend some time and educate yourself on the issue.”

Smriti Irani had earlier advocated against ‘paid menstrual leave’ and said that menstruation is not a “handicap” and hence there is no need for a “paid leave policy”.

The minister had said in Parliament, “As a menstruating woman, menstruation and the menstrual cycle are not a hindrance, it is a natural part of women’s life journey… We should not propose issues where Women are denied equal opportunities, just because someone who doesn’t menstruate has a special attitude towards menstruation.”
