McAndrew claimed figures of 5 for 42 for South Australia to bowl out New South Wales all out for 183. The hosts contested stumps on day two at Adelaide Oval to be 57 for 3 in the second innings, a lead of 167 runs.
Born in Wollongong, McAndrew represented the Sydney Thunder in the BBL but made his way to the Sheffield Shield through New Zealand cricket.
He joins South Australia for the 2021-22 season at the age of 28, and on Monday made a cameo in his home state.
The 30-year-old was first caught by Daniel Hughes driving on 13, with Ben Manenti making a brilliant catch on the ground.
He also bowled the in-form Jack Edwards, ending the all-rounder’s glorious start to the summer when he took one out again at left-hander off stump.
The wicket marks McAndrew’s sixth five-wicket haul in first-class cricket, having also taken 6 for 97 against the Blues at the end of last summer.
After McAndrew took charge of South Australia strongly, New South Wales were able to find some late success.
Henry Hunt was the other South Australian to go down, beating Edwards in the 7th minute as the Redbacks relinquished some of their grip on the game.
South Australia lost to Tasmania in their opening round match, while New South Wales drew with Queensland after leading for the first three days.
