Queensland 501 to 9 (Renshaw 135, Clayton 109, Eagle 90) won Victoria 253 and 144 (Swepson 5-39) by an innings and 104 runs

Queensland spinner Mitchell Swepson took career-best figures of 5 for 39 to send Victoria on to back-to-back defeats to start the Sheffield Shield season.

Victoria entered the final day in Mackay precariously placed at 104 for 7 and requiring another 144 runs to get the Bulls batting again.

Peter Handscombe (43 off 147 balls) and Todd Murphy (40 off 107) moved the scoreboard to 144 for 7 in a promising start to Tuesday’s match.

But it was a disaster from that point on as Victoria went 3 for 0 in the space of seven balls to lose the match by an innings and 104 runs.

The defeat came on the heels of their season-opening loss to Western Australia, when they were thrashed by an innings and 53 runs in Perth.

Handscomb was the first to fall on Tuesday when pacer Jack Wildermuth pushed down the leg side and was caught by wicket-keeper Jimmy Pearson. It was Pearson’s fifth catch of the innings.

Murphy was then left cursing himself after hitting Swepson straight to midwicket.

The match was over two balls later when Cameron McClure was caught out after struggling to deal with Swepson’s sharp delivery.

Queensland opener Matt Renshaw was named man of the match after hitting 135 in his team’s first innings total of 501 for 9 declared.
