The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued an orange alert in four districts of Kerala with strong winds (30-40 kmph) at isolated places in Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Idukki districts on October 16. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted.

Issuing yellow alert in eight other districts of the state, the weather department warned of possible localized flooding and urged citizens to avoid areas prone to water logging and stay away from weak structures.

The IMD said the storm is likely to cause moderate rainfall at one or two places over Thiruvananthapuram, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts in Kerala with wind speed reaching 40 km/hr. ,

Meanwhile, Indian Railways has said that the Thiruvananthapuram Central-New Delhi Kerala Express, which was scheduled to depart from the state capital at 12.30 pm today, was rescheduled to depart at 7.35 pm due to heavy rains at the Kochuveli Pit Line. But the water did not reduce. Rain.

The Railways further said that water did not recede from some other areas like the Kochuveli Pit Line, which led to changes in timings and delays in trains.

Earlier in the day, the weather department said light to moderate rain, isolated heavy rainfall, squall, gusty wind and lightning are likely at many places over Kerala in the next 48 hours due to the cyclonic circulation over coastal Tamil Nadu and adjoining areas. . And also on the south-east Arabian Sea and the Lakshadweep area adjacent to the Kerala coast.

Health Minister Veena George advised extreme caution against the spread of infectious diseases in areas flooded due to rain. The minister said as water recedes from floods and waterlogged areas, there is a possibility of spread of infectious diseases like leptospirosis – which is caused by coming in contact with water or soil contaminated with the urine of animals such as rats. According to a statement issued by his office, the minister said the health department is already on alert for dengue and leptospirosis cases.

George said, although the number of fever cases is low, it is important to be careful during the rains and advised citizens not to self-medicate.

The Kerala Health Minister directed that surveillance be strengthened in the districts and awareness activities be intensified besides ensuring availability of medicines, the statement said.
