Jurgen Klopp has admitted his wife Ulla is ‘happy’ with his decision to leave Liverpool.

The German shocked the world on Friday when he announced he would be leaving the club at the end of the season because he had run out of energy.

Klopp lifted Liverpool up during his tenure in the dugout and transformed the Premier League giants into one of the best teams in world football.

After confirming his exit, he revealed that his wife Ulla was involved in the decision – because she knows he doesn’t take big calls like this lightly.

“I had to explain this clearly to Ulla,” he said.

“I tried to explain it, I like a proper sports car – not the best but a very nice car, can still go 160, 170, 180 mph but I’m the only person who sees that tank meter going under .

“The outside world doesn’t see it, it’s good, so you go as long as we have to go, but then you need a break. In this case, you need to go to the petrol station.

“I know this is exactly what I have to do.

“Obviously Ulla wants me to do well and be okay, and when she realized I was really upfront about it – and she knows I don’t take things like this lightly – she was very supportive of me. Happy that I’m happy with the decision. Because that’s the truth.”

Klopp’s wife Ulla Sandrok has been the key to his life.

He had previously blocked the 56-year-old from taking the Manchester United job due to his doubts about the German player.

And Ulla was important as Klopp signed his last new contract with the club in 2022.

When it comes to replacements, reports claim there are five names to potentially replace Klopp.

Xabi Alonso is the favourite, with the Spaniard currently on his way to winning the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen.

Alonso won the Champions League and the FA Cup during his playing days on Merseyside, and in the process became a staunch Liverpool hero.

But when quizzed on Friday, the 42-year-old remained tight-lipped about his future, saying: “Right now, I’m really happy here. I enjoy my work here and feel that it provides me with a challenge.

“We are on an intense but beautiful journey here at Leverkusen and I am trying to give my best to help my players get ready for the next thing.”

Thomas Frank is also believed to have admirers in Liverpool.

The Dane has done wonders at Brentford over the last few years and looks like he is ready for a bigger job.

Meanwhile, Graeme Souness has reacted to Klopp’s exit and admitted he was surprised by the timing of the announcement.]

“The thing that has surprised me most about Jurgen Klopp’s announcement of leaving Liverpool is the timing,” he told the Daily Mail.

“When you have rebuilt such a fantastic team, why do you think it will compete for major honors in the near future?

“Maybe he was worried about the news leaking, because all his staff were going with him and a lot of people would have found out.

“Or, after watching his interview, I think it’s more about taking a burden off his shoulders and getting back to some kind of normalcy and enjoying family life once again.

“Anyway, I was completely stunned when I heard.

“Yes, he looks tired and haggard sometimes, but that’s the job. It takes a toll.”

“But I never doubted his hunger. His attitude still makes me think, ‘Bring it on!'”
