Joey Barton initially congratulates Mary Earps after the England star won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

But now he has taken a U-turn and criticized the decision to award the award to Manchester United’s goalkeeper.

On Monday night, Barton reacted to the Earps’ award win.

He simply told the ex, ‘Well done Mary’ along with a clapping emoji along with his post.

But Barton has now backtracked and insultingly called the Earps a ‘sack of spud’ on the same stage.

The former Manchester City, Newcastle, QPR and Marseille star also claimed there is a ‘culture of snowflakes’.

He said: “To win before Ronnie O’Sullivan and Frankie Dettori…?

“Well, that’s just crazy to me.

“Both are almost geniuses in their respective fields.

“They’ve lost to a big sack of spuds who plays in goal for the girls’ team.

“This is the world we live in. It all started from the days of the ‘everyone is a winner’ game.

“That’s what happens when you celebrate mediocrity. You create this culture of weakness. A culture of losers.”

“The Culture of Ice Cubes.”

Fans have already responded to Barton’s comments, condemning the 41-year-old and expressing their belief that he has crossed a line.

“I’m so confused that you literally congratulated her,” one user said.

Another said, “The guy at work today called her Mary Burps in the group chat and I reported him to HR and said he was being lewd.”

“They have a meeting after lunch. By the way – I know someone who works on computers and I have filed a complaint against your X account. Enjoy your ban :).”

A third said: “Here we go again.”

A fourth fan pointed out: “Gaza won it in 1990, we lost in the semi-finals, Michael Owen in the second round in 98, Beckham scored a goal for us to qualify in 2001.”

And a fifth simply said: “It’s a public vote… get rid of it…”

However, the Earps are unlikely to care.

She was delighted after winning the award in Manchester, commenting: “First of all, I’m so grateful to be included on this list of such incredible athletes.

“Sport is a wonderful thing where it brings the world together and it has been fantastic to hear everyone’s stories, so congratulations to you all.

“Thank you everyone for voting for me!

“This has not been the easiest journey and I would not be here without my loved ones, who have been there for me through some really good times.

“The last two years have been incredible, I’ve done more than I ever thought possible.
