The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on October 16 announced the appointment of career diplomat Arindam Bagchi as the next Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations and related global bodies in Geneva. The exact date when he will take charge has not been disclosed, but the ministry said he will take charge “shortly”.

Bagchi will replace Indra Mani Pandey, the current Indian ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva. He was given the chief charge in July 2020, and is now set to return to New Delhi after a three-year tenure.

“Arindam Bagchi (IFS:1995), presently Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, has been appointed as the next Ambassador/Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva,” the Ministry of External Affairs said.

The brief official statement further said, “He is expected to take charge soon.”

Bagchi, notably, is a 1955-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer. He was given the chief charge of the spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs in March 2020, at a time when the world was facing the COVID-19 pandemic. During his tenure, Bagchi was known for deftly handling media discussions on important topics such as the China-India border dispute in eastern Ladakh, the Indian government’s COVID-19 strategy and New Delhi’s G20 chairmanship.

Before serving as the spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Bagchi had also served as the Indian Ambassador to Croatia in Eastern Europe and Deputy High Commissioner to neighboring Sri Lanka.

Bagchi also served as Director in the Prime Minister’s Office and in the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in New York.

While her replacement as the MEA spokesperson has not been named yet, news agency PTI has learned from sources that four candidates are being considered for the post, including Mauritius High Commissioner Nandini Singla and Joint Secretary (G20) Nagaraj Naidu Kakanur. Names of senior diplomats are being considered.
