Alyssa Healy has been ruled out of the Sydney Sixers’ WBBL clash with Sydney Thunder and could spend an extended period on the sidelines after undergoing surgery on her hand following a domestic accident at home.

The nature of the injury and how it occurred has not been confirmed, but the Sixers announced on Sunday afternoon that Healy suffered a hand injury at home on Saturday night and underwent surgery on Sunday.

There is no time frame for her recovery yet. We are less than two months away from Australia’s tour of India, and the Sixers still have 13 WBBL matches, plus the finals if they qualify, before then.

The Australia vice-captain, who has captained the team in its last three international series in the absence of Meg Lanning, has already suffered two broken fingers this year while playing during the Ashes series and missed a hundred in England as a result.

The Sixers also revealed that Matilda Carmichael suffered a back strain during training on Saturday and has been ruled out of the Sydney Smash while Gabby Sutcliffe is also unavailable.

The three injuries meant the Sixers called up 18-year-old non-contract player Frankie Nicklen to be part of their 13-man squad as an emergency sub if needed against the Thunder.

Healy’s absence means the Sixers will need a wicketkeeper with 17-year-old Kate Bailey a likely option as she held Australia to the Under-19 T20 World Cup earlier this year.
