Indian Railways often faces criticism for the quality of its “unhealthy” food on social media platforms. One such recent incident has come to light on X (formerly Twitter) in which several rats were allegedly found tasting the food prepared for passengers in the pantry car.
In a post on X, Mumbai Matters wrote, “See… #IndianRailways has appointed 🐭Food Tasters🐀🐁 inside pantry cars to provide hygienic & tasty food to passengers & monitor quality control. “Pilot project inside the pantry car of 11009 LTT Madgaon Express on 14 October 2023.”

Responding to the post, IRCTC said that the matter has been taken seriously and appropriate action has been taken.
“The matter has been taken seriously and appropriate action has been taken. Pantry car staff have been sensitized to ensure cleanliness and hygiene in the pantry car. Indian Railways replied, “Appropriate advice has been given to the concerned to ensure effective pest and rodent control measures are being ensured.”
Since it was posted, netizens have criticized Indian Railways over the pantry car scenes. One user said, “Now is the time to fix accountability, to bow down, otherwise this attitude will continue. Strict punishment should be given to the concerned contractor and authority for such serious lapses.”
Another user commented, “I really want to see trains operated by private companies in the future.”
A third user wrote, “This is how it will be handled: Official: Please look into this and tag someone. That someone: Has informed the concerned officer about the matter. end of the story.”
