Bill Drummond, 30, came from the Kent Academy and made 369 appearances for the club in various formats, captaining the team on a number of occasions in Billings’ absence. Last season, he hit a career-best 300 not out against Northamptonshire, helping secure one of Kent’s two victories as they narrowly escaped in Division One of the LV= Insurance County Championship.

Bill Drummond will captain the team in the tournament, and a drive of over 50 will likely depend on availability around the hundred.

“I’ve been a Kent cricketer since I was seven, and I love the club,” Bill Drummond said. “My mission now, along with the rest of the team, is to take Kent Cricket forward into a new season as captain and it is a challenge I am looking forward to.

“I’m looking forward to working with Simon Cook and Matt Walker, shaping this team to be competitive on all fronts, but also making sure that spirit spreads to our age group teams, with the help of our fantastic coaches.

“I would like to thank Sam Billings for his six years as an excellent leader of the club and, of course, I will work closely with Sam as he remains one of the leaders in the dressing room. This is a team sport, and everyone will have a role to play.

“To our Kent members and supporters – we will have good times and I’m sure we will have tough times, but we will get through it all together. We will be looking forward to moving forward in 2024 and that will start with pre-season training. And before we all know it, April will once again be the time to proudly wear a Kent shirt.”

Kent Director of Cricket Simon Cooke added: “We are delighted to appoint Daniel as our club captain. He is one of the true leaders in the dressing room and has shown time and time again that he is one of our standout players – with excellent performances with the bat and also being part of the team’s senior leadership group.”

“He has led by example when he has been called upon either as captain or as a senior player when there has been a need, and I have full confidence in Daniel to be a huge contributor to the way we want to move forward, and play the kind of cricket that filters down.” Down to our talent pipeline and we hope for renewed success.

“We are also delighted to have Sam Billings continue to lead our T20 team. Sam has invaluable experience playing in and winning the biggest tournaments in T20 cricket, including leading us to the T20 title in 2021.”
