New Delhi: Four centrally run hospitals in the national capital, including All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi, have demanded an outlay of more than this. According to officials of these hospitals, Rs 9,000 crore will come from the upcoming interim budget, which will be presented by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman next week. The overall allocation to government hospitals is expected to increase by about 13% this year.

Apart from AIIMS Delhi, the other three hospitals are: Safdarjung Hospital, Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and Lady Hardinge Medical College. In the last Union Budget, the outlay for these four hospitals was 8,027 crore, out of which AIIMS Delhi will get the maximum.

AIIMS Delhi, a premier institute, has sought budgetary allocation According to institute officials, this time Rs 4,450 crore, 7% more than the amount allocated last year. The hospital was allocated in the Union Budget 2023-24 Out of which it has received Rs 4,134 crore so far 3,720 crores.

According to the hospital administration, the increase in budget expectations has been made keeping in mind the more expansion programs and payment of salaries, including those appointed on contract basis. “The institute has recently come up with new buildings and we need to maintain them. Also the existing old buildings need more maintenance. And so we are hoping that our budget will be increased this time,” said an official.

Being an autonomous institute, AIIMS Delhi gets a separate budget, which is higher than other centrally run hospitals.

Safdarjung Hospital is right in front of Delhi AIIMS, the demand for which has increased this time. 2,200 crore, which is about 18% more than last year 1,853 crores.

According to hospital officials, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is making efforts to raise the status of Safdarjung Hospital and start more departments to reduce the burden on AIIMS Delhi. The hospital is focusing on women’s health and upgrading its gynecology department. Other departments like Urology are also coming up with dedicated women OPDs (Out Patient Departments).

Apart from routine and elective surgeries, OPD and super specialty care, Safdarjung Hospital also provides free Ayurvedic OPD and Homeopathic OPD at its premises.

This time Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital has sent hope of approx. ₹1,600 crore, which is about 25% more than last year’s allocation 1,272 crore, the hospital administration said. The hospital has a nursing home for central government employees and members of parliament. It is also a training center for graduate students of Lady Hardinge Medical College.

Lady Hardinge Medical College has demanded budget this time 825 crore, which is an increase of about 7%, as reported by the hospital administration. In 2023-24, the hospital was given a budget of 768 crores.

The institute provides undergraduate medical education for women, postgraduate medical education for both men and women and medical care for women and children. The college has affiliated hospitals – Sucheta Kripalani Hospital and Kalavati Saran Children’s Hospital to provide comprehensive practical training to the students. It also runs the School of Nursing which offers nursing and midwifery courses.

“A major part of the budget demand is timely payment of salaries and allowances to outsourced employees. Salary budget arrives 250 crores and the remaining is given for building maintenance purpose. However, a major issue we are facing is the shortage of manpower for proper functioning,” said Dr Subhash Giri, Director, Lady Hardinge.

Higher outlay is being sought to finance expansion plans and timely salary payments
