According to reports, footballers from Belgium and Sweden called their loved ones inside the King Baudouin Stadium on Monday night.

Two Sweden fans have been killed by a gunman near the ground, while a third person is currently in hospital.


The incident happened less than an hour before Belgium and Sweden were to face each other in a Euro 2024 qualifying match.

The match was allowed to proceed, but was abandoned at half-time after player protests.

Fans from Belgium and Sweden had to wait inside the ground, with match-goers from the latter country being escorted back to their hotel rooms by police at 4am.

According to the Daily Mail, when emotions were at their peak, the players called their loved ones.

Belgian winger Yannick Carrasco, who plays for Saudi Pro League side Al-Shabab, was seen on his phone near the touchline.

DeBast Zeno was also photographed on the phone, pointing at the crowd and conversing with a manager nearby.

The pair were then allowed to go into the stands and collect family members who were present there to watch the match.

They then went back to the changing rooms accompanied by the security guards.

Since this tragic incident, more and more details have begun to emerge about what happened underground.

Fans sometimes applauded whenever the tannoy announcement asked them to be patient.

At 12:30, fans were allowed to leave the stands and go into the concourse.

He was welcomed by the players and Sweden boss Janne Andersson. Others waited patiently in their seats.

Belgian fans were first allowed in in small numbers around midnight.

However, Sweden fans had to wait until 4am, after which they were allowed to return to their hotel rooms under security.

Andreas Richt, coordinator of the Swedish advocacy organization Gula Wagen, has revealed how he received the news.

“The first thought was: ‘How can we ensure that all Swedes arrive safely?’

“Immediately afterward, people thought: ‘How can we somehow try to understand what has happened and how can we help and send our thoughts to the relatives of the victims?’

“There are a lot of thoughts floating around right now that you’ve never experienced before.

“I lived in America during 9/11, too, but this feels worse.”

Meanwhile, Sweden head coach Andersson highlighted his players’ decision not to restart the match at half-time.

“I got this information when I came down for a break,” he said.

“Immediately, I thought this was completely unrealistic. What kind of world do we live in today?
