The world witnessed the grand spectacle of the Republic Day Parade on the duty path of Delhi on Friday. The week-long celebrations of Republic Day will conclude with the closing ceremony of Beating the Retreat ceremony to be held at Delhi’s Vijay Chowk on January 29.

This year’s Beating the Retreat ceremony will be presided over by President Draupadi Murmu. A major highlight of the Beating the Retreat ceremony this year will be the grand fanfare of 29 tunes inspired by classical ragas.

The tunes will be played by the bands of the Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Air Force and CAPFs. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh.

About Beating the Retreat Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan

This ceremony is held every year on 29 January at Vijay Chowk. The chief guest of the ceremony is the President of India, who is escorted by the ‘President’s Body Guards’ (PBG) in a cavalry unit.

After the arrival of the PBG, the Commander asks the unit to give the National Salute, after which the National Anthem is played, then the National Flag of India is hoisted on the flagpole. Military bands, pipe and drum bands, buglers and trumpeters from various army regiments perform during the ceremony.

The roots of the ceremony date back to the early 1950s when Major Roberts of the Indian Army indigenously developed the unique ceremony of performance by a massed band.

This year’s event will also showcase one of the largest drone shows ever, with 3,500 indigenous drones lighting up the skies of Raisina Hills.
