Shakib was injured while running during the New Zealand match. He continued to bat for a while and also bowled his 10 overs but it was clear he was in pain. He underwent a scan in Chennai shortly after the match, but was reported to be in no pain.
“Shakib is improving,” Mahmoud said. “He is not in pain. But we will know the full scenario when he hits the nets tomorrow. He will also bowl between the wickets. Hopefully he can play against India. He has trained in the swimming session, some overhead exercises,” he added. “Half of his work is in the gym today. There will be a scan tomorrow that will give us a clearer picture of his condition.”
Mahmoud said that Shakib wanted to play but signing him was not that easy.
“These injuries usually cause a lot of pain,” he said. “It’s difficult to even walk around. Shakib is doing well. He gives us hope.
“Shakib wants to play, so if the situation is that he is 85-90% fit, as he was in the last match after getting injured, then we are also optimistic. But it depends on him being 100% fit.”
Mahmood said they will remain cautious about not risking Shakib with six matches remaining for Bangladesh in the season. “We don’t want him to miss the rest of the tournament after playing one more match. There are six matches left.
“It’s a call from the doctor and the physiotherapist. We don’t want to cause him problems in the long term. If he gets clearance from the physiotherapist, he will play.”
The Bangladeshi team had a two-day break in Pune and will return to training on Tuesday. They have so far won only one of their three matches.
