Apple today announced a new Apple Pencil that offers USB-C and a lower price. But it is not an improved version of the Apple Pencil. This version lacks some advanced features found on the second generation Apple Pencil, forcing users to choose between key features and USB-C recharging.

Starting at $79 and available through education channels for $69, this Apple Pencil is totally worth the price. The $129 second-generation Apple Pencil is still available and offers important features for artists and creative types. For the rest, the new Apple Pencil might be good enough.

A sliding cap hides the USB-C port, which is the only way to charge this version. It still has a flat side that can magnetically attach to the iPad, but doing so only deactivates the Pencil and it doesn’t charge. This version features the same accuracy and low latency found in the original and second generation. It also supports tilt sensitivity, allowing the user to change the width of the on-screen brush by changing the angle of the pencil.

Core Apple Pencil features are missing in this version. It lacks pressure sensitivity and the ability to double-tap the side of the pencil to change tools.

Apple also today announced a $9 USB-C to Apple Pencil adapter to give the original Pencil a USB-C recharging option.
