Angela Rippon has been flooded with support after a handful of Strictly Come Dancing fans objected to the routine she was given ahead of this Saturday’s show.

Rippon – who celebrated her 79th birthday this week – has been hard at work practicing the rumba as she and Kai Widdington perform the soundtrack to Conchita Wurst’s Rise Like a Phoenix.

The presenter has regularly impressed so far this series, earning a respectable score of 26 for his Week Three Quickstep, 31 for Week Two’s Foxtrot, and a respectable score of 28 for his first Cha Cha in Week One have gained.

But despite being given songs such as Cha Cha and Quickstep to perform, some fans have savagely claimed that Rippon is being given “unfair” points due to the speed of her routine.

And upon learning that he and Widdington will be tackling a typically slow-paced rumba this upcoming weekend, some expressed their opinions online.

In response to the announcement of the week four dances, one person wrote on Instagram: “Is Angela Rippon not being given any quick dances?

He said, “It feels very unfair because other dancers are being given a mix of the moves,” while a second on X, formerly known as Twitter, added: “So Angela Rippon this weekend. Got another slow dance.

“It’s no surprise then. It’s unfair she’s not dancing any faster #Strictly #StrictlyComeDancing #ittext2.”

However, despite dissenting input from some, many Strictly fans immediately flooded the web in defense of Rippon and her show-stopping performance on the dancefloor.

One fan argued: “She was given a quickstep last week. How she completes them depends on your particular point of view.

“She is 78 and suffers from asthma, so it was difficult to give her QS last week. She was also given cha-cha the first week.”

Another also responded: “And… it still wasn’t slow and it was fast. It’s how you do it, it’s not what everyone does, that’s the point.”

“She’s almost 80, give the lady a break,” a third enthusiastically defended, while a fourth also added: “Angela was given a chance to make a quick move last week. This is no slow dance people. Has been fired up and danced before like Katie Derham it’s slower and she’s much younger than Angela.

“It doesn’t matter how you perform. As long as the steps are where they were, it doesn’t matter. The cha-chas aren’t slow either. I’m not sure the rumba is going to be liked, Unless it’s very technical and exposes everything.”

Support for Rippon is also evident in the bookmakers’ odds, with the Ripon of Britain star a 25/1 outsider to face elimination this weekend, despite the angry opinion of some.

Rippon – whose iconic leg lift earned praise everywhere in week one, including from GB News’s Eamonn Holmes – took a break from rehearsals for Rumba this week to attend the Pride of Britain awards with her Strictly co-stars took.

It was an emotional evening – which saw Strictly supporter Amy Dowden cry over a schoolgirl’s battle with cancer – as Rippon took to the stage to present an award to charity fundraiser, John Burkhill.

Rippon showed her nurturing side when she danced with Burkhill on stage and received applause from the crowd.
