Alex Scott has made it clear how important representation is in women’s football after fierce criticism from Joey Barton.

Barton recently insisted that female presenters and pundits should not cover men’s sports.

He also singled out Scott for criticism and insisted that she was average as a player.

Barton has faced criticism for his comments, with many in the football world condemning the former Manchester City, Newcastle and Queens Park Rangers star.

Now, Scott has taken to Instagram to explain the importance of representation in football.

Sending a clear message, the former Arsenal star said: “It is important for representation to reflect society.

“It’s important that young girls and boys can turn on their TVs and open magazines and see themselves represented.

“The impact this will have on future generations can never be underestimated.

“The talent of the future will be extraordinary if we continue to recognize how important its representation is.”

Barton was present when Brighton beat Marseille at the Amex Stadium on Thursday night.

João Pedro scored the only goal of the game to ensure that the Seagulls remained top of their Europa League group.

And Barton has taken to social media to respond to the outcome.

“Just going home after the OM game. It’s not the result we wanted,” the midfielder said.

“Can’t thank @Winners1987 enough for taking care of us.

“Cassius is leading the Ultras songs from the front. Some club. @OM_Officiel

“See you all at the velodrome soon. Forza Om.”

Meanwhile, Scott isn’t the only person Barton has targeted over the past few weeks.

He criticized presenter Steven Howson on X earlier in the week and branded the Manchester United YouTuber ‘fat’.

Barton began his rant by asking: “Who’s this guy talking to this big couch guy…
