Air pollution: Delhi’s air becomes ‘severe’, AQI reaches 447; Flights delayed due to fog – Gudstory

Air Pollution News: The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) said the air quality index (AQI) in the national capital turned into the ‘severe’ category on December 23. The overall air quality in the national capital stood at 447 in the severe category.

According to CPCB data, at 10.30 am, 479 AQI was recorded in Anand Vihar, 454 AQI in Ashok Vihar, 452 AQI in Dwarka-Sector 8. Other areas like IGI Airport recorded 412 AQI, ITO Delhi 476, Jahangirpuri 475, 460. 470 in Narela, RK Puram, 475 in Rohini. Other areas like Shadipur recorded an AQI of 481, while Wazirpur recorded an AQI of 483.

Air quality index (AQI) between zero and 50 is considered ‘good’, between 51 and 100 ‘satisfactory’, between 101 and 200 ‘moderate’, between 201 and 300 ‘poor’, between 301 and 400 ‘very’. ‘Poor’, air quality index (AQI) between 401 and 450 is considered. ‘Severe’ and above 450 ‘Severe-Plus’.

The Center on Friday ordered a ban on non-essential construction work and operation of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel four-wheelers in Delhi-NCR amid worsening AQI in the region.

According to the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), adverse meteorological conditions including fog and haze, low wind speed are the major reasons behind the sudden increase in Delhi’s daily average AQI. CAQM is a statutory body responsible for formulating strategies to tackle pollution in the region. Reimposing restrictions under Phase-III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), the CAQM ordered a ban on non-essential construction work, stone breaking and mining in Delhi-NCR.

Under Stage-III, plying of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel four-wheelers has also been banned in Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddha Nagar.

Flights are being disrupted due to fog

Flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport were adversely affected on Saturday as visibility was affected due to thick fog over the national capital. According to the flight information display system of Delhi airport, a total of 11 international flights and 5 domestic flights to and from the airport were delayed today. Talking about Railways, at present no official confirmation has been given by the Railway Ministry regarding the delay of trains due to fog.
