Jack is plagued by an even bigger challenge in his life, a woman. Just as he is trying to break this stereotype and make something of himself as a surgeon, so is Lady Belle. She is the daughter of the governor of Port Victory who attracts Jack’s attention during his stay in the city. Lady Belle is determined to become the first female surgeon at Port Victory, but she soon becomes embroiled in the mischief that Jack and Fagin take part in. Whereas Dickens’s protagonist Oliver Twist is a warm and hearty hero, Jack is a more charismatic anti-hero. One who makes her way into people’s hearts – like Lady Belle for example.
