Some people are questioning the relevance of the FA Cup these days, believing that it has lost some of its luster amid the rise of the Premier League, Champions League and other competitions.

But try telling that to Maidstone United, who secured a place in the fifth round of the competition with a memorable win over Ipswich at Portman Road.

They entered the competition as underdogs, especially considering how they had been demoted just the previous year

On the other hand, Ipswich were firm favorites amid a stellar campaign under Kieran McKenna that saw them move up to second in the Championship table.

But football, in general, doesn’t always read the script.

And Maidstone showed with an emphatic win over Ipswich at Portman Road on Saturday afternoon that the magic of the FA Cup was well and truly alive.

As expected, it was Ipswich who dominated proceedings. They had more possession, more shots and more chances than their opponents.

Yet football is a game that can never be won based on statistics alone and Maidstone were defeated and made history by reaching the next round.

Certainly, his opening goal of the game was spectacular.

Lamar Reynolds was making his 26th appearance for the Minnows during the FA Cup tie.

And he scored a memorable goal to lead his team to victory.

Reynolds scored quickly and defeated Christian Walton, who cleared 1.96 m.

Given the magnitude of the match, and it being one of the biggest fixtures in the entire history of Maidstone, he could have been forgiven for feeling nervous.

Yet Reynolds produced a stunning chip on Walton to silence the home crowd and wake up the away crowd.

Ipswich were never going to sit back and accept defeat.

McKenna has installed spirit, quality and desire into a team that was lacking in all three areas prior to his arrival a few years ago.

And when they equalized through Jeremy Sarmiento, it seemed as if there was only going to be one result.

Maidstone were unlucky, Sarmiento’s strike took a deflection as it collided with the outstretched arm of Lucas Covolon.

But Ipswich didn’t care and those in attendance felt the match was turning in their favour.

There were other considerations beyond Maidstone.

Reynolds didn’t disappoint after his brilliant goal and delivered a wonderful pass to set up Sam Corne.

Corn then did the rest, sending his effort across to Walton to restore Maidstone’s advantage.

Ipswich once again tried to pull themselves together and score a goal that would force a replay.

They were also starting to get a little frustrated as George Edmondson went down easily in the box. However, instead of being given a penalty, the defender was booked for simulation by referee Antony Taylor.

Ipswich’s biggest chance came from Connor Chaplin’s header.

But Kovolan was somehow able to tip his effort over the bar after a bundle of players surrounded the goalkeeper.

Ipswich remained high and low until the end as they tried to avoid a major upset.

However, it was not enough, Maidstone were dreaming of taking more wickets and now their name is in the hat for the fifth round.
