Joey Barton has congratulated Mary Earps after the Manchester United and England goalkeeper won the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year award on Tuesday night.

The Lionesses goalkeeper has had a stellar 2023 and played a key role in helping her country reach the Women’s World Cup final earlier in the year.

The Earps faced competition from cricket and athletics rivals Stuart Broad and Katrina Johnson-Thompson to win the accolade.

She looked extremely happy on stage and became the second England female player to receive the recognition, 12 months after Beth Mead won the award.

Meanwhile, Barton has sparked controversy with his views on female pundits and presenters.

But he showed on X that he is a fan of the Earps, saying: “Awesome Mary.”

Barton, who starred with teams such as Newcastle, Manchester City, Rangers, QPR and Marseille during his playing days, also reacted after Kenny Dalglish won the Lifetime Achievement award.

He added, “Congratulations Kenny. A hero to the families of @hillsborosu1.”

Meanwhile, the Earps joked that she felt a little ‘sick’ after receiving the award at the ceremony in Salford.

“I feel a bit sick actually,” the England and United star commented.

“I have to say how humbled I am to be among these incredible athletes.

“Sport is a fantastic thing that brings the world together and hearing your stories is incredible.

“Thank you everyone for voting for me, I feel very honored and humbled.

“It’s the ultimate all-round sporting honour, we’ve had an amazing few years for the Lionesses and Manchester United. But this is wow.”

She added: “I’m going to try to take some time out this Christmas to think and reflect on all this.

“It has been an incredible few years and I feel truly grateful to have been given the opportunity to fulfill my biggest dreams.

“It’s beyond anything I could have ever imagined. I can’t believe I’m standing here – and I’ve taken a long walk in this dress and these heels.

“It’s a bit ridiculous.

“I think what I’ve learned over the years is that you have to show a lot of resilience, a lot of character in life.

“It is never easy. We all go through difficult times.

“And no matter what walk of life we are in, I think football is a medium, and we can all change the world in some small way.

“So I’m trying to do something similar.”

As for Dalglish, the Liverpool icon said he would consider his award ‘very valuable’.

“I’ll treasure it very much,” Dalglish said on stage.

“What we did in football was try to please people and the best way to please them was to get results.

“Fortunately we were able to do that a few times and if they enjoyed our wins it was only a fraction of the joy they got from the support they gave us.”

Dalglish said: “Going from the dressing room to the manager’s office, I wasn’t always the most comfortable, but I had fantastic support from the senior people at Liverpool.

“The most comfortable place for me as a player was the dressing room.

“I missed the dressing room, but you have to move on with your life and that’s what destiny was telling me, move on.”
