Frank Lampard has been overlooked by MLS side Charlotte FC in favor of Dean Smith, as his new ‘contract’ goes viral for some unique clauses.

Lampard has been out of work since his short interim role in charge of Chelsea at the end of last season and was in the running for the head position Stateside at Charlotte FC.

But the American outfit ultimately chose Smith, who had been sacked by Leicester City just six months earlier.

Charlotte FC confirmed the news on social media as they posted three photos of Smith as their new head coach.

But it was the contract signing photo that caught attention on social media.

From a distance, everything looks like any other contract signing picture.

But zooming in on the photo revealed a very different result with a contact header titled ‘Charlotte FC Very Official Head Coach Contract’.

The document reads like an informal contract, creatively drafted by Charlotte FC’s content team.

The fake contract included several bullet points that are not required in an official document.

And it also included two unusual job requirements for Smith relating to the club’s social media activity and mascot, Sir Minty.

The first read: “Sir Minty is permitted to have a recurring weekly meeting with you.”

The second lighter point reads: “You agree to one TikTok per month as deemed necessary by the social team. (Not really, that’s okay).”

Smith’s appointment at North Carolina is the 52-year-old’s first managerial post outside English football.

And he’s excited about the prospect of managing in MLS, as Charlotte FC is still relatively new to the division, debuting in 2022.

“I am honored to be appointed the next head coach of Charlotte FC and cannot wait to begin preparing for the 2024 season,” said Smith.

“During the interview process, it was clear that this is an ambitious club that has the right ingredients for success and I am delighted to start a new chapter in Charlotte.

“This is a unique opportunity to be part of a project with such potential to take Major League Soccer to new heights.

“I want to thank Mr. Tepper, Zoran, Joe and the rest of Charlotte FC’s leadership for entrusting me to lead this team, and I look forward to meeting everyone associated with Charlotte FC.”

After originally being interviewed by Charlotte this leaves Lampard still looking for his next venture.
