England goalkeeper crowned BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year – Gudstory

England goalkeeper Mary Earps has won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award for 2023.

She replaces her Lionesses teammate Beth Mead, who won the award last year.

She overtook England cricketer Stuart Broad to finish second, while heptathlete Katrina Johnson-Thompson finished third.

Other shortlisted sports stars were jockey Frankie Dettori, wheelchair tennis star Alfie Hewett and golfer Rory McIlroy.

Earps is also the third woman in a row to win it.

Earps is the third woman to win it consecutively, following Mead and young tennis star Emma Raducanu – the first time this has happened since the 1960s.

Speaking to the crowd he said: “First of all, I’m so grateful to be included on this list of such incredible athletes. Sport is a wonderful thing where it brings the world together and it’s been fantastic to hear everyone’s stories, So congratulations to all of you.

“Thank you to everyone for voting for me! I feel very honored and humbled, as this is an all-round sporting honour. We have had some incredible years but this is absolutely wow.”

“This has not been the easiest journey and I would not be here without my loved ones, who have been there for me through some really good times.

“The past two years have been incredible, I’ve done more than I ever thought possible. Thank you to my goalkeeping coaches, my teammates and my coaches.”

The goalkeeper was one of England’s key players as the Lionesses reached the World Cup final for the first time this summer.

He was named the best goalkeeper in the tournament, claiming the Golden Glove award.

The 30-year-old saved a penalty in the final, which England lost 1–0 to Spain.
