Gerwyn Price smiles as he awaits a potential grudge match with Gary Anderson at the World Darts Championship for the first time since meeting in the final almost three years ago.

The pair clashed throughout their time on the professional tour and Anderson was unimpressed by Price’s actions at Oche.

The 2018 Masters saw Anderson upset by Price, before they clashed in the Grand Slam of Darts finals later that year.

In this heated contest Anderson became angry because of his opponent’s excessive cheering.

The 52-year-old even pushed Price at one point as the ‘Iceman’ roared in his face after scoring a vital double.

Price held on to win the competition and repeated the feat in 2021 when the pair met for the first time at Alexandra Palace.

There is a possibility that their rivalry could be renewed this year, as both players will be drawn in the same category at the 2024 World Darts Championship.

And Price hopes facing his old foe could be a good omen for his title hopes.

“I think I’ve only played with Gary once at Worlds and everyone knows what happened there [laughs] – I lifted the trophy,” he told Online Darts.

“If I meet Gary, hopefully I can turn the tables on him.

“What happened in the Grand Slam, he played brilliantly and I also played really well, just missed a few chances.

“But yes, I can turn the tables if we meet in the fourth round, so hopefully I can go on and win that and lift the trophy.”

Price has become somewhat of a pantomime villain at the World Darts Championship in recent years.

The infamous match against Anderson occurred in 2018 when darts fans began rioting against him in favor of him.

Price was criticized at last year’s World Championships after he decided to wear earmuffs to drown out the noise.

This decision backfired as he suffered a crushing defeat to Gabriel Clemens in the quarterfinals.

But the Welshman apparently faced criticism as he threatened to boycott the World Darts Championship after pulling out.

He said at the time: “Not sure I’ll ever play in this competition again. It is very disappointing that you play the whole year to prepare for this one tournament.
