Coco Gauff has insisted she has no objection to Aryna Sabalenka grunting after her defeat at the Australian Open on Thursday.

The 19-year-old player went into the match confident that she could win the second Grand Slam title of her career, having won the US Open last year.

But Gauff struggled during the performance on Rod Laver Arena, with Sabalenka winning 7–6, 6–4 to reach the final of the tournament.

At a post-match press conference the American was asked about Sabalenka’s growling.

Yet Gauff made it clear that despite seeing her dreams of another Grand Slam victory dashed, she has no problem with her opponent’s behaviour.

“No,” she said. “I mean, I go through it a lot so I can’t sit here and say this is a distraction, it’s like we played for the fifth time.

“No, I don’t think so. At least it’s consistent with him, it doesn’t matter to me.”

“I played with a player in the past when he wasn’t consistent, they would intentionally growl for long periods at 30-30 or deuce points.

“If it’s consistent I don’t think you can really say anything about it.

“I don’t think you should grunt when someone’s hitting, but, like I said, I didn’t notice.

“I don’t think it’s a strategy, it’s just the way she plays tennis.

“I don’t understand how it could bother anyone but yes, it doesn’t bother me.”

Gauff felt that she played well during the competition.

However, he regrets not being able to serve at a higher level – admitting that it prevented him from performing better than his opponent.

“I think he served better, he made less mistakes but I also think I played a little more aggressively this time,” he admitted.

“At the US Open I think it was not a very good match for me. I think I won but I played better tonight.

“I wish I could make more first serves.

“I think that was the difference, he had a higher percentage of first serves and when you’ve double-faulted twice it’s harder to go for the second.

“I don’t think it was a mistake because I put myself in a position to perform well on set.

“At the end of the day it came down to a couple of points, even in second.

“There were a lot of positives to take away, today I don’t feel like I played bad, there were just some points I couldn’t win.

“The outcome is tough but I’m trying to look at the positives.”

Meanwhile, Sabalenka praised Gauff and revealed that she enjoyed their matches together after reaching the final.

“Like I said before, it’s always a great fight,” the 25-year-old said.
