It has been claimed that Bill Belichick declined the chance to immediately return to coaching in the NFL.
Former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Boomer Esiason says he has it on good authority that Belichick was offered the Atlanta Falcons job.
Belichick left his role as head coach of the New England Patriots in January after leading the team to nine Super Bowls in 24 seasons.
He revealed that it was a mutual decision between him and Patriots owner Robert Kraft that they should go their separate ways.
Belichick was immediately linked to the Falcons vacancy after Arthur Smith was fired in early January.
There were reports that Belichick had more than one interview with Falcons owner Arthur Black.
It seemed like the Falcons decided to go in a different direction when news broke that they hired Raheem Morris.
But now it has been claimed that Belichick may have turned down the Falcons.
Speaking on his radio show Boomer & Geo, Esiason revealed that he had heard from a source that Belichick was offered a chance to jump right back into coaching.
The 1988 NFL MVP said: “I was told yesterday, and I believe the source from where I got it, that Arthur Blank was believed to have bought into Bill Belichick and may have been offered the job.
“I don’t know why people say no, but legitimately, an NFL executive basically told me he believed Arthur Blank offered the Bills the job.”
Esiason wonders if there were aspects of the job that Belichick didn’t like and believes the great coach might want to wait a year until he finds a role he likes elsewhere .
He added: “Now there might be some caveats to that offer, you never know, it’s never going to be ‘Okay Bill, I want you, here’s a five-year contract, you can do whatever you want’. I Don’t think it was one of them.
“The way it was communicated to me was like, ‘Okay, I understand your concerns, but you’re going to have to deal with some of this. And we want you to come in, we want you to coach. ‘ ,
“And then maybe he thought better of it. And maybe he said, ‘You know what, I don’t want to go back right away, I want to go away for a year, I want to see what happens’ because we’ve all been there. Let us tell you that about five or six jobs will open next year.
“And a better situation might be where an owner says ‘You know what, I want to go down this path with you and I want you to take over my building and I want you to run it that way. Like you ran it. The New England Patriots’.”
