Aryna Sabalenka has praised Coco Gauff after defeating the young player to reach the Australian Open final.

As far as head-to-head record is concerned, the 25-year-old player fell behind her opponent in the semi-final match on Thursday.

But Sabalenka produced a sensational performance to secure her place in Saturday’s final.

The Belarusian won 7-6, 6-4 on Rod Laver Arena and will now face Dayna Yastremska or Qianwen Zheng in two days.

Sabalenka and Gauff have now met a total of seven times.

And the Australian Open star sent a message of support to her opponent, while also admitting she enjoys their matches.

“Like I said before, it’s always a great fight,” the 25-year-old said.

“He’s an incredible player. I really enjoy playing with him. Win or lose, the matches are always great. He’s a great player.”

“I really hope we play many more finals in the future and I hope I win them all! I really enjoy playing with him.”

Asked how she achieved the win, she added: “I think I was able to focus on myself and I was preparing for what Coco Gauff was going to do really well and all that. Will put the balls back to me and all I have to do is prepare to play an extra shot.

“I was ready for anything tonight and I think that was the key and definitely the support from you guys.

“The last time I played here I had almost no support and today guys, thank you!

“It definitely feels like home. Thank you so much. I really appreciate the support and the atmosphere.

“You make this place feel really special.”

Sabalenka achieved this victory while playing in front of many tennis greats.

People like Billie Jean King and Yvonne Goolagong Cawley were present to see the Belarusian regime supreme.

And playing in front of such icons was something Sabalenka was aware of as she moved closer to Grand Slam glory.

She said, “I couldn’t even dream of playing in front of you guys. Thank you so much for everything you’ve done for our game.”

“It’s a privilege to play in front of you. Thank you very much.”

Sabalenka is the current Australian Open champion.

She had won the award last year by defeating Elena Rybakina 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in a thrilling match.

Her victory over Gauff would be even more spectacular after losing to the American player in the US Open final last year.

If Sabalenka is successful in winning the Australian Open for the second consecutive year, she will become the first female player since Victoria Azarenka to retain the trophy.

As for Gauff, the 19-year-old will have to lick her wounds and get going again.

She has enjoyed amazing progress over the past few years, with her US Open victory being particularly memorable.

But Gauff, who is dreaming of a second Grand Slam title, will have to take some time to recover from this result.
