The Lok Sabha on Wednesday suspended two more opposition MPs – Thomas Chazhikadan and AM Arif – for the remainder of the winter session. He suspended for “showing placards and entering the well of the House”.

With the latest suspension, a total of 143 MPs have now been suspended from both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. Since Thursday last week, 97 MPs have been suspended from the Lok Sabha and 46 MPs from the Rajya Sabha.

Now the suspended MPs were demanding a response from Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the Parliament security breach incident. The suspension of Parliament members is the largest in the history of the country.

With this, the India Bloc lost almost half its strength in the Rajya Sabha and at least a third in the Lok Sabha. The opposition has hit out at the Narendra Modi government, saying the BJP government is trying to crush key laws in the “opposition-less” Parliament.

Meanwhile, a political controversy erupted after Trinamool Congress leader Kalyan Banerjee imitated Dhankhar during the opposition’s protest on the steps of Parliament against the suspension of MPs on Tuesday.

Many BJP leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned this incident. PM Modi also spoke to Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar and expressed “pain” over the alleged disrespect shown towards his office by some suspended MPs who copied his style of presiding over the House.

According to sources, MPs from the opposition India faction will protest and stage a “mock parliament” at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Thursday against the suspension of over 140 opposition MPs. “All the suspended MPs will join the protest at Jantar Mantar,” sources told news agency PTI.
